Communist Party-Controlled People’s Daily Online Launches a Blockchain-Focused News Channel

People.cn, the online version of People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist party’s flagship newspaper, launched a blockchain-focused news channel on its site on October 23, through which the Communist Party can distribute its unfiltered views on blockchain.

The initiative was announced on People’s Daily 2018 Autumn Blockchain Technology Forum which was held in Beijing. The newly-created news channel includes 7 columns, namely, Original, Information, Deep Report, Exclusive Interview, Events, Feature, and 24h Rolling News.

Ye Zhenzhen, general manager of People.cn stated that the website needs to spearhead the coverage of blockchain ecosystem in the country through integrating industrial resources and promoting applications. “ As blockchain technology is increasingly being taken seriously by government departments, People.cn commits to establishing a four-in-one business structure of content, research, training and capital around blockchain.” Ye said.

People Capital, the venture capital arm of People.cn, unveiled a blockchain research institution at the same event. The newly-created blockchain research institute consists with an expert committee, an industry promotion committee, a blockchain lab, a media lab, a tourism lab and a policy research office.

Specially, the blockchain lab will be jointly constructed by People Capital and Shenzhen-based technology company Xunlei Limited for “technology innovation”.And the policy research office will be set up at the Hainan Resort Software Community (RSC), a dedicated tech space and software park which is home to China’s first blockchain pilot zone. The office will focus on researching blockchain-related legal and policy issues to help policy makers develop well informed decisions and strategies.

The blockchain research institution announced the first batch of 16 experts for its expert committee , including Zhou Ping, the director of China Electronics Standardization Institute, Liu Xiaolei,dean of the finance department at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, Yang Chun, the general manager of Hainan Resort Software Community, and blockchain researchers from Chinese Internet giants such as Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba and Xunlei.

People.cn, also known as People’s Daily Only, went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2012, becoming the first news website in the country to be listed on the A-share market.
